Golf Clubs 101: An Introduction to Different Types of Clubs

If you are just beginning to love the game of golf and would love to know more about it, the very basic thing to learn is the different types of golf clubs and when to use them.

Golf is an enjoyable game that needs intense concentration and precision, and one fundamental aspect of golf is the proper use of golf clubs.  If you are beginning to get serious about this game, it is time to get yourself quality golf equipment.

Buying golf clubs is often perceived to be an expensive undertaking.  However, if you know where to look, they could be purchased at discounted rates without compromising quality.  At, you get to shop for various golf clubs that you would need for your very first set. The clubs are all sold at discounted prices.

Here are the different types of clubs that you would need:

1. Woods

Woods are types of clubs that move the ball farthest. The reason why it is called “woods” is because at one time, the head is actually made of hardwood. The most common type of wood used before was persimmon.  In the present time, woods are made from metals.  Most woods are made from durable steel or titanium alloy.

Woods are usually numbered from 1-wood, which is also called the driver, to progressively higher lofts and numbers.  The most common woods are odd-numbered, but there are also even-numbered woods.

There are two common classes of woods: the driver or 1-wood, and the fairway woods (also now called fairway metals).  Fairway woods are usually 3-wood and 5-wood.  Some women and senior citizens prefer to have higher numbered woods, from 4-wood to even up to 9-wood.

Golf Clubs 101 The driver or 1-wood is one of the most challenging clubs to get right because it is tough to control, being the longest club in the bag. It is intended to strike the ball on the upswing. The driver has become the most expensive club in a player’s bag.  The reason behind this is because the driver is the only club that emphasizes distance.  In fact, drivers can be hit from the fairway, but that takes a lot of skill and something that most beginners cannot successfully do.  Some of the highest-ranked drivers are the Callaway Golf-XR Driver, the Tour Edge Golf-Exotics E8 Beta Driver, and the TaylorMade Golf M2 Driver. These drivers are all available at low prices at

Fairway woods are intended to strike the ball at the bottom of the swing.  Fairway woods have two main distinct characteristics: first, they have a higher loft and secondly, they have a shallower face height.  The higher loft allows the ball to fly out of the turf and zoom over low obstacles.  The shallow face height allows you to hit your ball using the very center of the club, which provides more distance.  Some of the best fairway woods available at are the TaylorMade Golf Aeroburner Fairway Wood and the M1 Fairway Wood, the Callaway Golf XR Pro Fairway Wood, Cobra Golf King F6 Baffler, and the Tour Edge Hot Launch Draw Fairway Wood.

2. Irons

Irons have club heads that are made of metal, and they are thin from front to back. Their clubfaces are grooved to further improve spin control on the golf ball.

Golf Clubs

You use irons when your ball is fewer than 200 yards from the green. Irons have higher level of loft degree compared to woods, and are numbered from 1 to 9.  Numbers 1, 2, and 3-irons, usually called long irons, have very little loft. The middle irons are numbers 4, 5, and 6, and the short irons are numbers 7, 8, and 9.  The 9-iron has the highest loft degree, and most beginners do not have number 1 and 2 inside their golf bags because they are the most difficult clubs to use. In fact, 1-irons are not commonly available anymore because hardly anyone uses them.

The gap in yards between each iron number is usually about 10 to 15 yards. The higher numbered clubs, since they have higher lofts, usually result in shots that have a steeper trajectory.

When you buy an iron set these days, they usually have a 3-iron through 9-iron, plus a pitching wedge.  So a typical iron set has a total of 9 clubs. Some of the highest-rated irons are the Cobra Golf Fly-Z Combo Irons Graphite/Steel, Wilson Golf – Black Jack Hybrid Irons Graphite/Steel, Tour Edge Golf – Exotics E8 Irons Steel, and Callaway Golf – XR Irons Steel.

Wedges are special irons that you use when you strike the ball, make it fly high into the air, and make it land on a putting surface.

Wedges are actually irons but with a specialized purpose, that’s why they are often sold separately. There are four kinds of wedges:  pitching wedge, gap wedge, sand wedge, and lob wedge.  Pitching wedges are generally part of the set of irons that you will purchase.  The other three wedges can be sold separately or as a set of three.  If you are a beginner, wedges are not a big concern but as you improve in the game, you would eventually need a three-piece set of wedges. Some of the best golf brands such as TaylorMade, Callaway, and Mizuno have excellent-performing wedges.
